Logano Not Being Groomed To Replace Stewart

ESPN is reporting that Joey Logano, who is set to make his Nationwide debut at Dover International Speedway, is not being groomed to replace Tony Stewart at Joe Gibbs Racing.

But, that may be out of J.D. Gibbs’ hands:

We’re still just trying to feel out exactly where [Stewart] is and exactly how he feels. We want him to be here. I want him to be here for a long period of time. At the end of the day all we can control is through next year.

At the very least, JGR intends to hold Stewart to the final year of his contract. It has been reported that Stewart requested to be released from the final season of his contract, Stewart quickly dispelled that notion.

Earlier, I said that I thought that Home Depot would follow Stewart, if he chooses to leave. But, given the fact that the company has seen a decline in first quarter earnings, the company may not stay in the sport.

I still doubt that Home Depot would stay in the sport without Stewart. No offense to Logano, but I highly doubt a sponsor would move from Stewart, a two-time champion, to Logano, a rookie with little name recognition.

The other thing to note, Greg Zipadelli and Home Depot are both only signed through 2009. Beyond that, if Stewart decided to leave, both could leave with him.

I think Stewart is going to leave, after his contract is up. It’s highly unlikely he will leave any sooner than that.
