Kasey Kahne Wins Coca Cola 600
Kasey Kahne assumed the lead in the closing laps of the Coca Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, when Tony Stewart, who was leading by over five seconds following green flag pit stops, blew a tire and hit the wall with two to go. Kahne passed Stewart and never looked back.
Jeff Gordon, Carl Edwards and Dale Earnhardt Jr. rolled the dice, choosing not to pit under green during the closing laps, instead hoping to stretch their fuel.
The moves paid off for Gordon and Jr. Edwards, however, ran out of gas in turn 3 of the final lap and lost several positions as he coasted to the finish. He ended up finishing ninth. Some could argue that finishing ninth means that the move paid off.
Top 10: Kahne, Greg Biffle, Kyle Busch, Gordon, Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Burton, Matt Kenseth, Elliott Sadler, Carl Edwards, and David Reutimann.
Notables: Sam Hornish Jr. (13th), Kevin Harvick (14th), Mark Martin (15th), Kurt Busch (16th), Stewart (18th), Clint Bowyer (25th), and Jimmie Johnson (39th)
Attrition was the word of the night for leaders. Kurt Busch was leading when he blew a tire and hit the wall. Brian Vickers, who led for quite a bit, hit the wall hard when his wheel fell off. His tire bounced into the infield and hit someone’s camper. No one was injured.
Earnhardt Jr. blew a tire while leading and hit the wall. Jimmie Johnson dropped a cylinder while leading, then his motor gave way. Tony Stewart was leading with two to go when his tire blew and he had to come to pit road.
