Kahne Ready For Championship Run?
Winning the Coca Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway should boost Kasey Kahne’s confidence enough to seriously contend for the championship this year, according to several bloggers and NASCAR reports.
Kahne contend for the championship? Please.
No offense to Kahne, he’s a good driver. He has won eight races. But, can he contend on a weekly basis? No.
When you think of what it takes to be a champion, you have to think consistency. The guys who run up front week in and week out are the contenders. The guys who overcome a flat tire, a pit road violation, damage to their cars to still post top 5s and top 10s. These are the guys who are contenders.
Kahne has finished 22nd or worse five times this season. Those aren’t the stats of a champion.
I think that Gillett Evernham Motorsports has been struggling with the COT, and Kahne’s performance has suffered as a result. I think most of the blame should go to GEM and setting up the cars correctly. But, to contend for a championship it takes a mix of driver, equipment, crew chief, and luck.
Kahne is lacking a couple of those ingredients. And, until he finishes in the top 5 or top 10 consistently, he will not be a contender.
