Kahne's Mid-Season Surge?
After posting three top-10 finishes in the first three races, Kasey Kahne hit a rough patch, posting 17th or worse finishes in five of the next six races, his lone top 10 being a seventh at Bristol.
Since winning the All-Star race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Kahne has won two of the last three races, leading many journalists to proclaim that Kahne is starting a mid-season surge. But, is he?
Sure he’s won two races, no easy feat this season. But, between those two races, he finished 31st at Dover.
Overall, this season he has finished 20th or worse five out of 14 races. He’s finished 30th or worse twice.
I’m not taking away from his two victories, but he needs to run more consistently. If he were posting top 10s when he wasn’t winning, then I’d agree that his performance was a “surge.”
Comparing the next nine races to the same races last year, Kahne finished 23rd or worse eight times. I know that’s no indication, but it does deserve some thought.
If he posts a string of top 10s over those races, then, and only then, will I agree that he’s starting a mid-season surge.
