Earnhardt Jr. Wants Shorter Pocono Races

ESPN is reporting that Dale Earnhardt Jr. thinks it is time to to shorten length of the Pocono Raceway Sprint Cup races.

He said:

I think the races are too long here. I think that’s obvious. I think NASCAR thinks it’s too long, but the people in charge of that will not change it for whatever reason. Just for spite maybe, I don’t know. But they don’t have to be out there running.

Jr. proposes 400 mile races instead of 500 mile races. He said:

It’s a big, big race track. It’s no different really than running at Indy [the Allstate 400] and that’s 160 laps. It’s a 400-mile race and that’s probably what this should be.

I’m not even sure how I feel about the Pocono races. I’m not sure how much the length would make the races more interesting. I think the problem is that the Pocono races are too close together.

I propose moving one of the Pocono races, so that they’re not a month apart. I also suggest moving them because Indianapolis and Pocono are somewhat similar, with the long straightaways. And, having them back to back doesn’t make much sense.

All of that said, Sunday’s race was fun to watch at the end, not knowing who had enough fuel to go the distance and who didn’t.
