Mayfield May Not Be Telling The Truth

While watching the ongoing saga between NASCAR and Jeremy Mayfield over his failed drug test, I can’t help but find the whole situation odd.

After Mayfield’s failed test was reported, he came out and said:

In my case, I believe that the combination of a prescribed medicine and an over-the-counter medicine reacted together and resulted in a positive drug test.

But, David Black, who runs the lab that conducts NASCAR’s testing said that disputed his claim. Black said:

What we have is a clear violation of policy. … In my many years of experience, I have never seen a violation like this due to the combination of over-the-counter or prescription products.

Since then, several drivers have called on NASCAR to release the results of the test so that they know what NASCAR is testing for, assuming Mayfield’s story is true. Thus far, NASCAR has refused to make the test results public.

NASCAR’s refusal has me, like many of you I’m sure, thinking that Mayfield tested positive for an illegal drug, such as marijuana. If Mayfield’s story were true, why would NASCAR be so secretive?

But, if he did test positive for something illegal, then why is he so adamantly sticking to his medicine combination story?

Certainly NASCAR could release the results and humiliate him. So, it would seem Mayfield has a lot to lose by sticking to a story, if that story were in fact, false.

If you want to get into conspiracy theories, I suppose you could believe that Mayfield knows NASCAR will never release the results of the test, and thus can stick to a fake story because it his word against theirs, without backing from definitive test results.

I find that a little far-fetched, but I’m in the belief that Mayfield tested for something illegal. But if that’s the case, then why is he sticking to this story that the doctor who runs the tests already discredited?

You’ve got me. I have no idea. But, today it was reported that Mayfield hasn’t receive a copy of his test indicating what yeilded the positive result. NASCAR, however, said Mayfield was informed verbally three times last week what he tested positive for. So, someone here is lying, or at the very least stretching the truth.

I tend to think it’s Mayfield. I have nothing against the guy, don’t know him personally, but he seems to have a lot more to lose in this situation, and therefore more incentive to lie.

Mayfield said he never received a PAPER copy of his test, implying he didn’t know what he tested positive for. But, NASCAR said it told him verbally three times. So, technically Mayfield isn’t lying. But, he certainly is implying something that isn’t true.

In the end, we may never know the truth because NASCAR may never release the test results, and Mayfield may never change his story.
