GM Cutting Back Support In Sprint Cup

impala1Following the news that General Motors would be cutting its support [1] of Chevy Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series teams, GM has told Sprint Cup teams to brace for cutbacks in its financial support of the series.

Officials from Hendrick Motorsports, Stewart Haas Racing, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, and Richard Childress Racing confirmed that GM asked them to participate in financial cutbacks.

Hendrick said:

We had very productive conversations this week with the folks at General Motors, and it’s clear they are committed to racing and committed to our organization. They’ve asked us for some help, and we’re going to give it to them.

Tony Stewart, owner of SHR, said:

While this cutback will force us to review our budget at SHR, it will not impact our preparation for the track or the return on investment we provide to our partners. We’re racers, and racers find a way to make things work.

With GM cutting its support in all three of NASCAR’s top series, my concern about some teams making the jump to Sprint Cup because of the lack of factory support in Nationwide and the truck series is no longer as valid as it was. It seems that the situation would have little to no affect on teams that were considering to make the move to Sprint Cup.

But, GM is cutting back support in Sprint Cup, while it completely pulled support in N’Wide and the truck series. This could attract some N’Wide teams  to move to the Cup series because a little factory support is better than none.
