Martin Wins Sylvania 300; Expands Points Lead
Mark Martin held off a strong Juan Montoya on back-to-back restarts to win the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway under caution. The win is Martin’s fifth of the season, and it allowed him to expand his points lead after the first race in the Chase.
Top 5: Martin, Hamlin, Montoya, Jimmie Johnson, and Kyle Busch.
Kurt Busch, Ryan Newman, Elliott Sadler, Greg Biffle, and Clint Bowyer rounded out the top 10.
Notables: Brian Vickers (11th), Tony Stewart (14th), Jeff Gordon (15th), Jeff Burton (16th), Carl Edwards (17th), Matt Kenseth (23rd), Kevin Harvick (32nd), Dale Earnhardt Jr (35th), and Kasey Kahne (38th).
Stewart had trouble and lost a lot of time on pit road when his rear-axle cap broke and had to be repaired. He recovered to finish 14th, but dropped to sixth in the points standings.
Vickers also had trouble in the pits when his team needed to pus the car back into his stall to put on a dropped lug nut.
Kahne lost an engine on lap 67, ending his day. He finished 38th.
Dale Earnhardt Jr was running in the top 5 most of the day, and was running fourth with less than 20 to go. After a late restart, Earnhardt Jr was running three wide on the outside with David Reutimann in the middle and Montoya on the bottom. Reutimann got loose and bumped Jr, who spun and hit the wall. The damage ended his day.
