Johnson Wins NASCAR Banking 500
Jimmie Johnson passed teammate Jeff Gordon in the closing laps of the NASCAR Banking 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, and then drove away from Matt Kenseth and Kasey Kahne to win his sixth race of the season, and third in the Chase. Johnson also padded his points lead.
Top 5: Johnson, Kenseth, Kahne, Jeff Gordon, and Joey Logano.
Clint Bowyer, Casey Mears, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr, and Kurt Busch rounded out the top 10.
Notables: Ryan Newman (11th), Brad Keselowski (12th), Tony Stewart (13th), Jeff Burton (14th), Greg Biffle (16th), Mark Martin (17th), Kevin Harvick (18th), Brian Vickers (34th), Juan Montoya (35th), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (38th), Carl Edwards (39th), and Denny Hamlin (42nd).
On a lap-125 restart, the field accordioned causing Martin to get into the back of Montoya, casuing heavy damage to both cars. They were able to continue, but had bouth were out of contention for the victory. Martin finished 17th, while Montoya finished 35th.
Denny Hamlin had a strong car early, but suffered an engine problem around lap 190. The team thought he lost a valve. He finished 42nd. Carl Edwards lost an engine on the lap 304 restart, he finished 39th. And Dale Earnhardt Jr had a transmission problem that put him nearly 30 laps down. He finished 38th.
