Stewart Wins Third Consecutive N’Wide Opener
Tony Stewart managed to avoid all the carnage that was the Nationwide Series’ Drive4COPD 300, winning the race by 0.309 seconds over Carl Edwards. Stewart held off challenges from Edwards, Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick, keeping his foot on the gas and his lead.
Top 5: Stewart, Edwards, Harvick, Justin Allgaier, and Brian Vickers.
Paul Menard, Joey Logano, James Buescher,Kasey Kahne and Steve Wallace finished sixth through 10th.
Notables: Brad Keselowski (14th), Kyle Busch (18th), Greg Biffle (26th), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (29th), and Danica Patrick (35th).
Danica Patrick, whose Nationwide Series debut garnered most of the media spotlight, was caught up in a 12-car wreck, suffering front-end damage that ended her day. Patrick struggled early but managed to recover and catch the lead draft. Then, contact between Colin Braun and Josh Wise triggered a Big One. Patrick tried to back it down, but couldn’t avoid the spinning cars (proving, in fact, that she is just human). She took her car to the garage. She finished 35th.
Twenty-three laps later, Patrick’s car owner and teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr was involved in a big wreck when Edwards and Brad Keselowski got together, forcing one of them into Dale Jr’s rear quarter panel. Jr hit the wall hard, and then his car flipped several times. Dale Jr, however, was okay and walked away.
After the wreck he said:
I had a lot of fun today but that was expensive. We’ll have to go back and balance our books. It was an expensive day for JR Motorsports.
He even joked with his PR guy that he was glad his wreck was spectacular. I’ll say it was spectacular.
