Two-Tire Call Gives Newman Phoenix Win

Ryan Newman took two tires during the final pit stop under caution and drove passed Jeff Gordon to win the Subway Fresh Fit 600 at Phoenix International Raceway. The victory is the first in 77 races for Newman, and the first for his Stewart Haas Racing team and crew chief Tony Gibson.

Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch, who each led more than 100 laps, took four tires on the final pit stop. They restarted seventh and eighth, respectively. The six cars in front of them took two tires.

On the final restart, Jeff Gordon chose the outside line but couldn’t keep up with Newman in turn 1. Newman took the checkered flag .130 seconds ahead of Gordon.

Top 5: Newman, Gordon, Jimme Johnson, Mark Martin, and Juan Montoya.

Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer, and Joey Logano rounded out the top 10.
