Hamlin Wins Fifth Sprint Cup Race Of Season
Denny Hamlin dominated the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 at Michigan International Speedway, winning by 1.246 seconds over Kasey Kahne, the only driver with a car fast enough to keep Hamlin in sight. The win is Hamlin’s fifth this season, making him the winner of half of the last 10 races.
Top 5: Hamlin, Kahne, Kurt Busch, Jeff Gordon, and Tony Stewart.
Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Jeff Burton, Greg Biffle, and Joey Logano rounded out the top 10.
Notables: AJ Allmendinger (11th), Carl Edwards (12th), Juan Montoya (13th), Matt Kenseth (14th), Mark Martin (16th), Martin Truex Jr (17th), David Reutimann (18th), Kevin Harvick (19th), Kyle Busch (20th), Clint Bowyer (22nd), Jamie McMurray (24th), and Ryan Newman (32nd).
Just before the half-way point in the race, Red Bull Racing teammates Scott Speed and Casey Mears, who is filling in for Brian Vickers, made contact, sending Speed sliding through Turn 2. He didn’t hit anything. Mears ended up going to the garage, finishing 36th, while Speed went on to finish 28th.
Afterwards, Speed said:
Both of us were struggling but [Mears] wrecking us like that — I mean is ridiculous. Whenever you’re at Hendrick [Motorsports] and Richard Childress Racing and then you still don’t have a ride and haven’t done anything there’s no real excuses after that, but whatever.
Mears couldn’t be reached for comment.
