Richard Childress Racing has completed an “equity partnership” deal with Thomas Pumpelly, former part owner of TRG Motorsports. Pumpelly divested himself from TRG and took with him the owner’s points of the team’s No. 71.
Under the partnership with Pumpelly, RCR will get the owner’s points for the No. 71, which will guarantee the team’s fourth entry, the No. 27 of Paul Menard, a starting spot in the first five races of 2011. Without the deal, Menard would have been forced to qualify on speed.
Pumpelly will be listed as the owner of the car to start the season.
As a result of Pumpelly taking the No. 71′s owner’s points with him, the No. 71 reached an agreement with Richard Petty Motorsports to use the owner’s points from the now-defunct No. 98. TRG will start the season with Andy Lally behind the wheel.
RPM ended the season with four teams in the top 35 in owner’s points, which guarantees a starting spot in the first five races of 2011. In the off-season, however, RPM shrank from four teams to two, leaving them the option to tranfer to the points to other teams.
In addition to the deal with TRG, RPM also teamed up with Wood Brothers Racing to start Wood Brothers II LLC. As a result, the team’s No. 21 Motorcraft Ford and driver Trevor Bayne will use the owner’s points from the No. 19 team, which closed in the off-season.
