Harvick, Busch Receive Fines And Probation

Busch, driver of the No. 18 car, and Harvick, driver of the No. 29 car, have each been fined $25,000 and placed on NASCAR probation for the next four NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship points events until June 15 for violating Section 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing – involved in an altercation on pit road after the conclusion of the race).
It is being reported that the probation period also includes the All Star event.
Harvick tweeted that about the penalty before it was officially announced by NASCAR. He said that he understood the penalty because it took place on pit road.
I can’t say I disagree with the penalty Harvick received but, I am little surprised that Busch received the same penalty. Pushing Harvick’s empty car on pit road seems more dangerous, as it could have hit an official or innocent bystander. Harvick’s punch only could have hit Busch.
For that reason, I thought Busch deserved a longer period of probation and a slightly larger fine — maybe one more week and $5,000 more.
According to SceneDaily.com , Busch said that he didn’t have reverse when he was on pit road, so instead of getting punched, he drove forward.
I was either going to get punched in the face and then wait for Harvick to get back in his car for me to go or just drive through his car and push it out of the way so I could get out of there and try not to get hit or anything like that. I made a judgment call there and it wasn’t one of the best choices that I had, but I pushed his car out of the way on pit road and, unfortunately, there [were] men walking down pit road.
In the end, I think the penalties were pretty fair. NASCAR had to do something to prevent pit road altercations involving cars, but it couldn’t make the penalties too harsh for fear of looking hypocritical.
What do you think of the penalties?
