Hendrick Motorsports is reportedly close to a multi-year contract extension for NASCAR’s most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr, team owner Rick Hendrick said at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He hopes to announce a deal next month.
While he would not provide details, Hendrick said most of the major points have been agreed on, and the deal would be for another three to five years.
We know we want to be together and we just want to get this over with. It shows I’m committed to him and he’s committed to us.
This news is sure to upset some of Jr Nation, as some of them do not believe that Hendrick is committed to seeing Earnhardt Jr reach Victory Lane again or win a championship. They believe that Hendrick is focused more on Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon, instead of helping Earnhardt Jr’s team become championship-caliber.
While you can argue whether or not Hendrick is committed to Earnhardt Jr, you can’t argue with the fact that he is trying to improve Earnhardt’s performance. The crew chief shuffle that occurred in the off-season is a clear indication that Hendrick wants to see Earnhardt Jr improve.
