Jayski is reporting that Joe Gibbs Racing is courting Roush Fenway Racing driver Carl Edwards to take over the No. 20 Home Depot Toyota. Edwards’s contract expires at the end of this season.
Edwards signed a three-year contract extension with RFR in May of 2008 . Back then, he briefly considered free agency before ultimately deciding to stay with RFR.
Earlier this season, Edwards seemed like he was willing to test the free agent market again this time. He said:
What I want to do is what is going to give me the best chance to win the most championships.
But RFR teammate Greg Biffle, who re-signed with the team in April, said that he would be surprised if Edwards did not re-sign with the team .
If JGR is attempting to court Edwards, they may not be as attractive as they once were. At Pocono Raceway, JGR driver Kyle Busch was penalized six points for failing post-race inspection. And, the team brought oil pans that were never submitted for approval to Michigan International Speedway, which could mean fines and point-deductions.
If Edwards were to end up at JGR in the No. 20, Joey Logano, current driver of that car, could move to a long-rumored fourth JGR car. But there is no word on whether that will happen, or who would sponsor him. Logano seems to have a good relationship with GameStop, so they might be a candidate in this scenario.
