RFR Expects To Field Three Teams In 2012

[2]Roush Fenway Racing president Steve Newmark said that he expects to have three teams in 2012, according to a report from ESPN.com [3]. With UPS moving from the No. 6 team [4] and driver David Ragan to the No. 99 and driver Carl Edwards, Ragan’s future with the organization is in serious jeopardy.

Newmark said:

The most likely scenario is three. We’re still plugging away at the fourth, but we all recognize the realities that when you’re this late in the season it makes it more difficult to secure that. At the end of the day we need to put ourselves in the best position to win races. The goal isn’t to be a certain size. The goal is to win races.

As it currently stands, only the No. 16 of Greg Biffle and No. 99 of Edwards are fully sponsored for 2012. The No. 17 of Matt Kenseth does not have sponsorship with Crown Royal leaving at season’s end [5]. RFR is prepared to run that car without sponsorship.

The No. 6 could run select races next season, but Newmark did not say that Ragan would be in the car. Trevor Bayne or Ricky Stenhouse — or a combination of all three — could drive the car next season.

Bayne is expected to drive some races in Wood Brothers Racing’s No. 21 next season.

RFR also plans to field two Nationwide Series entries next season, though no drivers have been specified for those rides. According to ESPN, Stenhouse was promised an RFR ride next season.

Meanwhile, Ragan told SceneDaily.com [6] that he isn’t sure which direction he’ll go next season, but he said that he is confident he will be in the Cup series next season.

Ragan said:

I’m not going to be in a back-marker car just to say I’m driving a Sprint Cup car. I’m not too proud to go back to the Nationwide Series and contend for a championship.

Ragan has been linked to TRG Motorsports’ No. 71 [7].
