Dillon To Fill In For Stewart At Bristol

Austin Dillon, driver of the #3 AdvoCare Chevrolet, stands in the garage during practice for the NASCAR Nationwide Series VFW Sport Clips Hero 200 at Darlington Raceway on May 10, 2013 in Darlington, South Carolina.Former Camping World Truck Series champion and current Truck Series points leader Austin Dillon, of Richard Childress Racing, has been named interim driver of Stewart Haas Racing’s No. 14 Sprint Cup Series Chevy for the Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway.

Dillon will fill in for Tony Stewart, who broke his tibia and fibula in a sprint car crash at Southern Iowa Speedway.

Stewart was released from the hospital and has a follow-up appoint scheduled for Aug. 14th. After that appointment, SHR competition director Greg Zipadelli hopes to have a better idea of how long Stewart will miss, which will allow them to put a firm plan in place.

No driver has been named to fill in in the Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway. But, Zipadelli said that if Dillon performs well enough at Michigan, he may be the short-term solution. Zipadelli said:

We’d rather have one or two drivers if we can work it out, that’ll give us some consistency and build some communication between the crew and driver and give us our best chance. We’re working on some of that stuff now. It may be more than two, maybe three or four. If that’s the case, we’ll look at each individual racetrack and see who’s available who runs best at the track and make the best choice we can.

Dillon is also driving in the inaugural Nationwide Children’s Hospital 200 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Because it is the Nationwide Series’ first visit to the track, there will a full day of testing on the Thursday before the race, allowing Dillon to miss the practice sessions on Friday to practice and qualify Stewart’s car.
