Tony Stewart will miss the remainder of the 2013 Sprint Cup Series as he recovers from a broken leg he suffered in a sprint car race earlier this month.
On August 5th, Stewart was involved in a wreck at Southern Iowa Speedway in which he broke his tibia and fibula.
SHR competition director Greg Zipadelli said that he talked to Stewart’s doctors and they felt that it would be best for Stewart to focus on his recovery.
Mark Martin has been named as the interim driver for the No. 14 team. He will drive in 12 of the remaining races. Austin Dillon will also drive the car at Talladega Superspeedway.
Obviously, I’m disappointed to be out of the Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevy for so long, but the team is in very good hands with Mark Martin and Austin Dillon. Mark is someone I’ve looked up to my entire career and I have a tremendous amount of respect for him. Austin is a great young talent, and he showed that…at Michigan. Greg Zipadelli, Steve Addington (crew chief) and everybody at SHR supports them 100 percent. This isn’t a situation anyone wanted, but we’re going to make the best of it. In the meantime, my focus is on getting healthy and getting back into my Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevy.
As a result of Martin moving to the No. 14, Brian Vickers, who will take over driving duties of the No. 55 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota full time in 2014, will drive the No. 55 for 12 of the remaining Sprint Cup races this season.
