Crew Chief Childers Leaving MWR For SHR, Harvick
I ended up making the decision a couple of days ago. I told MWR yesterday and had to tell all my guys this morning. I was pretty much a mess trying to tell them. This team is the best group of guys I’ve ever been around and a pretty big family. After being here for five years, it’s pretty hard to walk away from that. Going to SHR and working with Harvick is an opportunity that not many people ever get. I was afraid if I didn’t take it I would regret it the rest of my life. That’s not something I wanted to do.
Martin Truex Hr, Vickers’ teammate, said:
He’s been a big part of Michael Waltrip Racing, obviously. He was there long before I was. He’s very smart and I really enjoyed my time there working with him, because we did work very closely together with all our teams. He brought a ton to the table. It’s going to be hard to replace him for sure, especially this late in the season. He’s definitely a special talent, (but) that’s part of the sport–people change and find things and better opportunities elsewhere, and I wish Rodney the best of luck. Hopefully, we’ll find somebody good to fill that position.
Originally, Childers planned to stay until the end of the season, but MWR announced Scott Miller as the interim replacement for Childers atop the pit box of the No. 55 Toyota. Miller, MWR’s vice president of competition, served in the interim role with MWR in 2011, when Chad Johnston was suspended.
