Larson To Drive EGR’s No. 42 In 2014
Earnhardt Ganassi Racing has scheduled a press conference at Atlanta Motor Speedway to announce the new driver of the No. 42 Target Chevy. The press conference is scheduled less than 30 minutes before practice, leading the Sporting News to speculate that no current Sprint Cup driver would participate in a presser so close to the start of practice.
That could be an indication that they are going to announced Nationwide Series driver Kyle Larson as the new driver of the No. 42, they say.
Larson is a developmental driver with EGR. Currently, he is on loan to Turner Scott Motorsports, racing in the Nationwide Series.
In his second year of stock car racing, Larson sits eighth in N’Wide standings, with six Top 5s. He also won the Camping World Series Race at Rockingham Speedway earlier this season.
Since it was announced that Juan Montoya would not be back with EGR in 2014, Larson has been the only driver linked to the No. 42. The biggest-name driver available currently is Ryan Newman, but he hasn’t been mentioned for this ride. Many speculate that he will replace Kevin Harvick at Richard Childress Racing.
Mark Martin is also available, but he is looking for a part-time ride. So, there’s little chance that he will end up in the No. 42.
Update: Multiple sources have confirmed that Kyle Larson will be named the new driver of the No. 42 Sprint Cup Chevy. Larson will take over driving duties in 2014.
But, an EGR spokesman declined to comment.
