Martin Truex Jr wasn’t the only driver to get injured in a multi-car accident in the IRWIN Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin suffered a sprained hand in that same crash. He is not expected to miss time.
Hamlin caught his right hand in the steering wheel during the wreck. He is currently wearing a splint on his right thumb but the injury is expected to heal within two weeks.
Hamlin said on Sirius XM’s Dialied In show:
I couldn’t get my finger out of the wheel quick enough before it spun, and it obviously took some ligaments with it. I feel this pain, and it’s going to be tough. I tested on Monday and Tuesday at Chicago, and I couldn’t put my thumb on the wheel.
Hamlin may wear the splint during the AdvoCare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, but that hasn’t been decided yet.
Hamlin missed time earlier this season. In an accident with Joey Logano in the Kobalt Tools 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Hamlin suffered a fractured L1 vertebra. He missed six races, effectively ending his Chase hopes.
Tony Stewart is also out for the rest of the season, after breaking his leg in a sprint car race earlier this month. And, Bobby Labonte is missing the AdvoCare 500 at Atlanta after breaking three ribs in a bicycling accident.
