5-Hour Energy announced that they will return to Michael Waltrip Racing and driver Clint Bowyer.
5-Hour Energy released a statement on their Facebook page :
This week the 5-hour ENERGY team met after the New Hampshire race to discuss our future with Michael Waltrip Racing. While our original plan was to announce the status of our sponsorship at the end of the year, this timeframe left many concerned about their future. … After several internal discussions and meetings with MWR, we are prepared to announce our decision ahead of schedule. 5-hour ENERGY will be back as a sponsor of MWR and Clint Bowyer for 2014. We look forward to another great year of competitive racing.
The 5-Hour Energy sponsorship was in question after NAPA Auto Parts decided to ends its sponsorship of the No. 56 Toyota and driver Martin Truex Jr because of MWR’s actions in the closing laps of the Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond International Raceway — the final race before the Chase.
Clint Bowyer spun, suspiciously , bringing out the caution that prevent Ryan Newman from winning the race and knocking Truex Jr out of the Chase. The team also called Brian Vickers to the pits to allow Truex Jr to gain more points by passing him.
MWR was penalized for the latter action . As a result, NAPA decided that they will leave the organization at the end of the season.
