NASCAR Orders RPM Driver Lajoie To Take Sensitivity Training

Richard Petty Motorsports development driver Corey Lajoie has been placed on probation indefinitely and ordered him to undergo sensitivity training after he tweeted an insensitive comment about a man in a turban at the airport.

Lajoie, a driver in the K&N East Series and the ARCA series. He is slated to run some Nationwide Series races next season for RPM.

Lajoie tweeted:

Is it stereotyping to ask TSA to cavity search the gentleman with a turban and a gray beard? I didn’t think so either.

The tweet has since been deleted.

According to NASCAR’s code of conduct rule, no one in NASCAR can make a public statement that “that criticizes, ridicules, or otherwise disparages another person based upon that person’s race, color, creed, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, religion, age or handicapping condition.”

Lajoie released a statement apologizing for the tweet:

I am very sorry for those offended by my recent remark. It was an immature and insensitive comment.  I’m upset with myself and how this has affected what has been a very positive year in my career.

Earlier this month, Nationwide Series driver Nelson Piquet Jr was fined $10,000 [1], placed on probation, and ordered to sensitivity training after he used a derogatory slur. Jeremy Clements, of the N’wide series, was also fined for making a racial remark [2] during an interview earlier this year.
