During the Kroger 200 Camping World Truck Series race, Kevin Harvick and Ty Dillon were involved in an incident while the two were racing for second in the closing laps. The collision removed both from contention for the win.
Dillon is the grandson of Richard Childress Racing owner Richard Childress, the team for which Karvick drives in Sprint Cup competiion.
Harvick, who is leaving the RCR after 13 seasons to join Stewart Haas Racing, sounded off about Childress, RCR, and Dillon.
[Dillon] just dumped me. Exactly the reason why I’m leaving RCR because you’ve got those kids coming up, and they’ve got no respect for what they do in this sport and they’ve had everything fed to them with a spoon.
At one point, Harvick called Dillon a “punk-ass kid.”
After the incident, Dillon hit Karvick’s truck several times. It is being reported that Childress encouraged Dillon to hit Harvick under caution.
Harvick drove to Dillon’s pit stall and stopped. A crew man from Dillon’s truck threw an orange hammer at Harvick’s truck.
Childress indicated that he was “very disappointed” in Harvick’s choice words, but he said that it wouldn’t affect his ability to finish out the season in the No. 29 Cup Chevy. Childress said:
I’ve got too much class to say what I want to say right now. When I say it, I will say it to his face.
Harvick later apologized for his remarks. He said:
You go back and look at the things that happened, and sometimes you regret the things that you say for sure. Yesterday was definitely one of them. I hate it for my guys, and everybody working on the cars. Obviously, when those emotional situations come about; you say things that you really don’t want to say. I just want to apologize to all of those guys, work hard today and try and do everything we can to win the race.
