It’s Official: Edwards To JGR In 2015

Joe Gibbs Racing announced that Carl Edwards would join the team in 2015 in a fourth car, ending months of speculation that he would join the team.

ARRIS Group Inc, a telecommunications company specializing in the design and engineering of broadband networks, will sponsor Edwards in the No. 19 JGR Toyota for half the season.

JGR owner and founder Joe Gibbs said:

This is one of the biggest days in Joe Gibbs Racing’s history. To be able to bring a driver the caliber of Carl Edwards on board to launch our fourth team is just a thrill.

Edwards wouldn’t say that he was committed to re-signing with Roush Fenway Racing when asked earlier this year.

Since then, he has turned down Richard Childress Racing, been rejected by Penske Racing (though he probably wasn’t seeking a seat there), and been inaccurately paired with M&Ms in a fourth JGR car.

RFR then announced its 2015 driver lineup, which did not include Edwards, which solidified the Edwards to JGR rumors.

Edwards joins JGR at an interesting time. JGR appears to be struggling.

Kyle Busch is in a slump, finishing 39th or worse in the last three races, including one DNF due to a lost engine.

Denny Hamlin has also expressed frustration with the JGR Toyotas being down on power at the intermediate tracks. That frustration came to a head in the Pure Michigan 400 when Dale Earnhardt Jr crowded Hamlin into the wall because Earnhardt was tired of Hamlin side-drafting him. Hamlin said he had no choice because he’s down on power. He confronted Earnhardt on pit road after the race.

And, Matt Kenseth is also in a slump, going winless so far this season, and finishing 38th in two of the last three races.
