The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the German automaker, BMW, is developing a Formula One car using hybrid technology that is expected to hit the track next season.

Earlier this year, Fédération Internationale de L’Automobile, Formula One’s governing body, announced rules that allow teams to boost the power of their cars if they use hybrid technology. Teams can add an electronic motor that could give the car 80 extra horsepower for about six seconds at a time.

BMW is also testing “regenerative braking,” which allows electricity generated in the brakes as the car slows and to be stored in batteries or supercapacitors.

Could hybrid Sprint Cup cars be on the way? Well, if teams could get a six second boost of 80 horsepower by using the technology, I think they would certainly to consider it.
