Denny Hamlin held off Jimmie Johnson to win the Tums Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway, but Johnson came one step closer to earning his fourth consecutive championship, increasing his points lead to 118 points.

Denny Hamlin held off Jimmie Johnson to win the Tums Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway, but Johnson came one step closer to earning his fourth consecutive championship, increasing his points lead to 118 points.

Top 5: Hamlin, Johnson, Juan Montoya, Kyle Busch, and Jeff Gordon.

Jamie McMurray, Ryan Newman, Mark Martin, Tony Stewart, and Kevin Harvick rounded out the top 10.

Notables: Brian Vickers (11th), Joey Logano (12th), Bobby Labonte (13th), Matt Kenseth (14th), Jeff Burton (15th), David Reutimann (16th), Kurt Busch (17th), Clint Bowyer (19th), Carl Edwards (20th), Greg Biffle (25th), Dale Earnhardt Jr (29th), and Kasey Kahne (32nd).

On a green-white-checker finish, John Andretti spun at the start finish line. He was unable to drive away, yet NASCAR did not throw the caution the right way, allowing the leaders to race back to the line.

As the cars came off of turn four, Andretti started to move towards the center of the track, in an effort to get going again. At that point, NASCAR displayed the checkered flag and the yellow flag. Chad Knaus looked confused and surprised that NASCAR did not display the caution, thus ending the race, right after Andretti spun.

Joey Logano used pit strategy to win a rain-shortened Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, earning his first career Sprint Cup victory.

Logano became the youngest winner in Cup series history at 19 years, one month, and four days, nearly one year sooner than the previous record holder, Kyle Busch.

Top 5: Logano, Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch, David Reutimann, and Tony Stewart.

Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch, Sam Hornish Jr, Jimmie Johnson, and Kasey Kahne rounded out the top 10.

Notables: Juan Montoya (12th), Dale Earnhardt Jr (13th), Mark Martin (14th), Denny Hamlin (15th), Greg Biffle (18th), Carl Edwards (19th), Clint Bowyer (20th), Matt Kenseth (22nd), Ryan Newman (29th), Jeff Burton (31st), Kevin Harvick (34th), Brian Vickers (35th), and Martin Truex Jr (37th).

Give a call to John Andretti who was not in the top 20 most of the day, but used strategy to earn a 16th place finish.

On a restart with about 125 laps to go, Dale Earnhardt Jr, who was running third, spun his tires and did not get going. Martin Truex Jr had to check up and made minor contact with him. Kyle Busch, who was running behind Truex, moved to the outside to avoid Truex and Earnhardt. Juan Montoya was on the outside, forcing Busch to stick his nose in the middle.

As Busch’s nose got to Truex’s right, rear quarter panel, Truex moved up, and was hooked by Busch, sending him spinning. Truex slid down the track, and was hit by Jeff Burton. Several cars were involved.

Truex blamed Busch because he thought Busch was too aggressive and tried to pass him before the start-finish line, even though the rules forbid it. As Busch came back around as the field was under caution, Truex gestured as if he was going to throw his helmet, but he did not throw it. After the race, Busch apologized.

While I thought Busch was a little aggressive with the move, I can’t say it was his fault. He moved to the outside to avoid slower cars, but he couldn’t give them much room because Montoya was there. This, I think, should be chalked up to one of those racing deals.

Jeremy Mayfield will return to Sprint Cup competition full time in 2009, driving the No. 41 Toyota for his own team, Mayfield Motorsports.

MM is a joint venture between Mayfield and Gary Smith, Chairman and CEO of All Sport Inc., which will sponsor Mayfield’s entry. All Sport body quencher is a sports drink.

Mayfield attributed his venture into ownership to a key change NASCAR made in the off season:

I have to give NASCAR a lot of credit for the things they’ve done in the sport over the last two years to make it possible for people like me to get involved as a team owner. The new COT car and even more importantly the testing ban have made it a reality for me to come in and compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Triad Racing Technologies will provide engines and chassis for MM, while Tony Furr will serve as crew cheif. Furr served as crew cheif for Cale Yarborough’s No. 98 team and driver John Andretti, where he led Andretti to victory in the Pepsi 400 from Daytona International Raceway. He also led Jerry Nadeau to his first and only victory, in the Napa 500 from Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hendrick Motorsports’ No. 25.

Mayfield acquired the number from Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, but the points from the 41 did not move to Mayfield’s team.

See images of the car on Jayski’s page.
