He finished 17th, on the lead lap.

Annett suffered the broken sternum in an accident during the season-opening Drive4COPD 300 at Daytona International Speedway.

Annett underwent surgery for his injuries and has spent the last three month healing. To prepare for his return, Annett began physical therapy three weeks ago.

Tony Stewart won the DRIVE4COPD 300 at Daytona, but the victory was marred by a heart-stopping wreck that saw Kyle Larson's car demolished after flying into the catch fence.

Tony Stewart won Saturday’s DRIVE4COPD 300 at Daytona International Speedway, but the elation of his victory disappeared in the wake of a heart-stopping wreck that saw Kyle Larson’s car demolished after flying into the crossover gate that provides access from the asphalt to the main grandstand.

As Stewart dodged the crash and crossed the finish line, the front clip of Larson’s car sheared off, ripping the engine out of its compartment. The front suspension and engine ended up on the walkway at the bottom of the stands.

A tire from Larson’s car also flew into the grandstands.

Regan Smith led as the cars approached the checkered flag, but Smith tried to block Brad Keselowski, who was running second, and turned across the nose of Keselowski’s car.

Daytona International Speedway president Joie Chitwood III indicated that 14 spectators were transported to medical facilities off-property and 14 others were treated on site.

“First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with our race fans,” Chitwood said. “On the incident, we responded appropriately according to our safety protocols and had emergency medical personnel at the incident immediately.

“We transported 14 people off property and treated 14 people at our on-track care center.”

Chitwood referred questions about the conditions of the injured fans to Halifax Medical Center.

“I’d have to refer you to Halifax for any of the conditions of the patients,” Chitwood said.

Byron Cogdell, spokesperson from Halifax Health, said seven spectators had been transported to Halifax Medical with injuries related to the accident, five more spectators for other issues. Two of the injured spectators, one adult and one child, were in critical condition, though all patients were listed as stable.

The adult who was in critical condition was suffering from head trauma, Cogdell said. Halifax has not released the names of the injured pending notification of and consent from their families.

Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR’s senior vice president of racing operations, said all drivers involved in the last-lap crash had been treated and released from the infield care center.

As Chitwood and O’Donnell spoke, and with Sunday’s Daytona 500 17 hours away, track workers continued the process of repairing the fencing in the area of the crossover gate, approximately 75 yards short of the start/finish line at the 2.5-mile superspeedway.

“We’re very confident that we’ll be ready for (Sunday’s) event, with the 55th running of the Daytona 500,” O’Donnell said. “But, as with any of these incidents, we’ll conduct a thorough review. We’ll work closely with the tracks as with all our events, learn what we can and see what we can apply in the future.”

The emergency in the grandstand tempered Stewart’s fifth victory in his last six February races at Daytona and the 11th Nationwide Series win of his career.

“Fortunately, with the way the event’s equipped up, there were plenty of emergency workers ready to go, and they jumped in on it pretty quickly,” NASCAR president Mike Helton told ESPN. “And right now, it’s just a function of trying to determine what all damage is done.

“They’re moving folks, as we’ve seen, to care centers and taking some folks over to Halifax Medical (Center), so we’ll be able to update later on, but right now, all we know is everybody’s working real hard on determining what all happened.”

Larson climbed from his car almost immediately and was evaluated and released from the infield care center.

Drivers, Larson included, were more concerned with the safety of the fans than the outcome of the race.

“The important thing is what’s going on on the frontstretch right now,” Stewart said after climbing from his car. “We’ve always known since racing was started this is a dangerous sport. But it’s hard. We assume that risk. It’s hard when the fans get caught up in it.

“As much as we want to celebrate right now, as much as this is a big deal to us, I’m more worried about the drivers and fans in the stands right now. I could see it all in the mirror and it didn’t look good from where I was either.”

Smith said he wasn’t about to surrender the victory to Keselowski 200 yards from the finish line, but his first thoughts were with the injured spectators.

“Everybody the only thing I’m concerned about right now is the people in the stands,” Smith posted to his Twitter account after the race. “Praying for all who were affected by the accident.”

Keselowski echoed the concern and said he understood Smith’s attempt to block his move.

“We made a move to try and win the race,” Keselowski said. “We were in the catbird seat. Regan was in a good spot. He was first and I was second, and we were pushing. I kind of had the run and the move to win the race, and Regan obviously tried to block it, and that’s understandable.

Sam Hornish Jr. crossed the stripe in second place, followed by rookie Alex Bowman, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Parker Kligerman.

The last-lap wreck wasn’t the only serious incident of the event. A 13-car wreck in Turns 1 and 2, triggered by contact between the No. 43 Ford Mustang of Michael Annett and the No. 3 Chevrolet Camaro of Austin Dillon — both championship hopefuls — stopped the race after 116 laps and set up the finish.

Annett was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center. Richard Petty Motorsports later reported that Annett, whose car slammed the outside wall nose-first, was treated for bruising on his chest and received a CT scan. He remains in the hospital for further observation.

Joey Logano dominated the OneMain Financial 200 at Dover International Speedway, leading 184 of 200 laps, for his seventh Nationwide Series win of the season.

The steep concrete banks of Dover International Speedway aside, Saturday’s OneMain Financial 200 was hardly a cliffhanger as Joey Logano dominated from start to finish in winning his seventh Nationwide Series race of the season.

Momentarily, at least, a caution on Lap 177 for Tim Andrews’ blown engine injected a modicum of suspense, but Logano reasserted his superiority after a restart on Lap 182 and pulled away for his second victory at the Monster Mile and the 16th of his career.

Logano, who led 184 of 200 laps, crossed the finish line 0.876 seconds ahead of runner-up Paul Menard to complete a season sweep at Dover. Michael Annett ran third, tying his career-best in the Nationwide Series, and fourth-place Elliott Sadler increased his series lead to nine points over defending champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who finished ninth. Kyle Busch completed the top five.

Logano said the winning moves actually started in Friday’s practice, after the track began to resemble what he and crew chief Adam Stevens thought would be Saturday’s racing conditions.

“The track changed a lot throughout practice,” Logano said, “and we knew the direction we needed to go for when the race started. Adam did a really good job of keeping his head in the game and knowing which way it was going to go — keeping my head in the game and knowing which way the race track was going to go. That helped.

“The first few laps, when the track was green [before it rubbered in], we were a second-place car behind the 31 [of Justin Allgaier]. Once it rubbered up, it was like, ‘OK, now I’ve got my old race car back,’ and we were able to stay out front most of the day after that.”

By the time NASCAR called a planned competition caution on Lap 46, Logano had opened a lead of roughly three seconds. Kasey Kahne took over the top spot with a two-tire call under yellow, but Logano regained the lead moments after a restart on Lap 51.

The driver of the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota held the lead until the second caution of the afternoon — resulting from oil on the track from Jeremy Clements’ car — slowed the field on Lap 116. The brief interruption, however, didn’t slow Logano, who took off again from a restart on Lap 124 and built a lead of 1.5 seconds over Allgaier.

Menard, who took over the second spot after both Allgaier and Sam Hornish Jr. had tire issues, pointed to Logano’s advantage on restarts as the difference in the race.

“We had a really good long-run car,” Menard said. “I believe we were the fastest car on the track, faster than Joey, but he could just take off faster than us. I don’t think he got passed all day.”

Sadler and Annett likewise took advantage of the final restart, when Kahne held up the bottom lane and allowed drivers on the outside to leap-frog toward the front. For Sadler, the positions gained toward the end of the race vastly improved what had been a difficult afternoon.

“We just fought a loose race car all day,” Sadler said. “The guys did a good job, made some good adjustments at the end, and we got a pretty fortunate restart there. It was a good run all in all for us. I wish I had done a better job [Friday in practice] of getting it ready for the race, but all in all, that’s a good finish for us.”

Darrell Wallace, 18, who claimed the top starting position during Saturday’s qualifying, is the first African-American driver to win a pole in the Nationwide Series. Wallace, part of NASCAR’s youth movement dubbed the “Next 9,” is a six-time winner in the K&N Pro Series East. He finished 12th to end a streak of three straight top-10 results in his first three Nationwide starts.

Kevin Harvick won the Virginia 529 College Savings 250 at Richmond International Raceway, ending a 30-race NASCAR Nationwide Series drought dating to the fall race at Richmond in 2010.

Assuming the lead on a late restart in Friday night’s Virginia 529 College Savings 250 at Richmond International Raceway, Kevin Harvick ended a 30-race NASCAR Nationwide Series drought dating to the fall race at Richmond in 2010.

Harvick beat Ricky Stenhouse Jr. to the finish line by 1.944 seconds to win for the fifth time at the 0.75-mile short track and for the 38th time in the series, tying Carl Edwards for third on the all-time victory list.

Kurt Busch ran third, followed by Denny Hamlin and Michael Annett.

“It’s been a great year in this Nationwide car,” said Harvick, who led a race-high 141 laps. “I know we haven’t won the races that we needed to, but, man, we’ve led a ton of laps and been in contention to win just about every race I’ve been in this car this year.

“Sometimes you go through slumps like that, and when you break ‘em, it just makes it that much sweeter.”

Busch lost the lead on Lap 226 after he tapped the rear bumper of Dexter Stacey, causing Stacey to spin off Turn 4. Harvick nosed ahead as Busch avoided the spinning car and had the lead when NASCAR threw the seventh caution on Lap 227.

“We had a brake vibration that wouldn’t allow me to get to the bottom of the corner easily,” said Busch, who had grabbed the top spot on Lap 202. “I could get there, but a lot of feedback in the pedal and a vibration made it tough to get down to the bottom of the corner.

“When you have that, it’s tough to race guys exactly clean, and you’re right on the ragged edge the whole moment. When I had Harvick behind us, when we were leading, if I could hit it perfect, we were going to hold him off. If I was off just a fraction, he was right there. When I drove down into [Turn 3], and the lapped car [Stacey] chose inside, I chose inside, and I was like, ‘This isn’t going to be good.’ ”

After the caution for Stacey’s spin, Harvick pulled away on the ensuing restart on Lap 234, with Stenhouse taking second from Busch.

The championship battle took a sudden turn on Lap 186, with Stenhouse and Elliott Sadler racing side-by-side through Turns 3 and 4. Sadler, on the inside during a sustained fight for the second position that already had lasted seven laps, broke loose beneath Stenhouse and backed his Chevrolet into the outside wall, crushing the rear deck.

Sadler lost a lap and restarted 28th on Lap 193. He rallied to finish 12th and retained the championship lead by one point over Stenhouse, the defending champion.

Sam Hornish Jr.’s waning championship hopes suffered a serious blow on Lap 156. Maneuvering to avoid the No. 51 Chevrolet of Ty Dillon, Hornish took a shot from the No. 22 Dodge of his Penske Racing teammate Ryan Blaney.

After cutting his left-rear tire, Hornish spun into the outside wall in Turn 1 and slid back down the track into the path of the No. 41 Ford of Timmy Hill. The collision tore the rear deck off Hornish’s car and scattered debris through Turns 1 and 2.

NASCAR red-flagged the race for four minutes to clean the track, and when the field restarted on Lap 164, Harvick assumed his customary position at the front of the pack, before Busch took a turn at the point.

Hornish finished 30th and is fourth in the series standings, 50 points behind Sadler.

Elliott Sadler won the NASCAR Nationwide Series U.S. Cellular 250 at Iowa Speedway, his fourth victory this season.

It isn’t how you start, but how you finish.

After earning three straight poles at Iowa Speedway, Elliott Sadler finally has a finish to match.

Sadler passed Justin Allgaier with 58 laps remaining and pulled away to win the NASCAR Nationwide Series U.S. Cellular 250 on Saturday night at the 0.875-mile oval. The triumph was his fourth this season, setting a personal best for wins in a year.

Sadler gave a victory yell on the radio and jogged over to grab the checkered flag for his achievement. He talked about redemption after last week’s incident at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where he was penalized for beating the leader to the start/finish line during a late restart.

“It’s been a rough week,” Sadler said. “We felt like we should have won that race last week.”

His father underwent knee surgery but provided his son with some motivational words for his race at Iowa. Sadler took the advice to heart and claimed his second win in three weeks.

“He said do not let them take this championship away from you,” Sadler said. “Go to Iowa and kick their butts.”

Sadler, who increased the one-point season points lead over Austin Dillon to 18, led 60 laps, after surrendering the lead to Darrell Wallace Jr. on the opening lap. Wallace, making his second Nationwide start after placing ninth in his series debut at Iowa Speedway in May, came in seventh, leading the first 37 laps before Dillon took over.

“I didn’t really like not leading the first lap but that’s not the one that pays the money,” Sadler said. “We learned what we had to learn and we moved on from it. I felt like my restarts the rest of the race were pretty good.”

Sadler was able to briefly gain the lead from Dillon, his Richard Childress Racing teammate, off the restart, following a competition caution on lap 50. The second caution when John Blankenship spun out 87 laps in jumbled the front-runners. Allgaier benefited from a fast pit stop to take the lead, while Dillon dropped to 10th and Sadler fell to eighth.

Sadler fell back again after a pit stop during the third caution for debris on the track, but he maneuvered through the field before overtaking Allgaier late.

“I had a hard time passing (Allgaier),” Sadler said. “He knew where my car was fast.

“He just got a little loose off of turn 4 and that particular lap I got a really good bite under him. . . . Once we got out front, I knew we were in really good shape.”

The win capped a huge day for RCR. Team owner Richard Childress was at Pocono Raceway for Joey Coulter’s win in the Pocono Mountains 125 on Saturday afternoon. He joined Sadler in Victory Lane at Iowa Speedway later that night. Adding to the impressive day, Sadler and Dillon hold the top two spots in Nationwide points.

“That was great,” Childress said of the day. “You get two wins in one day, let’s hope tomorrow we can cap it off and make it a full sweep with a third one.”

Childress had faith Sadler would come through with the win, praising his passes of Kurt Busch for second before taking the lead from Allgaier.

“I couldn’t be prouder of him,” Childress said. “Elliott got up on the wheel when he had to get up on the wheel.”

Allgaier, who has 13 top-10 finishes in 2012, recorded his best finish of the season, placing second. He set a personal best, leading 101 laps of a Nationwide race. His previous best was 88 laps led.

“To come here and lead most laps, and run as good as we did I was proud of that,” Allgaier said. “It’s tough to see Elliott out there and know you’re catching him and there’s not really much you can do.”

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. had won three straight Nationwide races at Iowa Speedway, but couldn’t make a push for the lead. He suffered problems with tire grip after starting 11th and finished fifth. Stenhouse held his third-place spot in points, falling to 21 back of Sadler but closing to three points behind Dillon.

Sam Hornish Jr. won the final Dash 4 Cash $100,000 bonus as the program from series sponsor Nationwide drew to a close. He placed third, finishing one spot of Des Moines native Michael Annett.

Annett remained sixth in points, trailing Allgaier by 26, and placed a few spots ahead of fellow Iowan Brett Moffitt, who made his Nationwide Series debut Saturday.

Moffitt placed ninth, one spot ahead of where he started. He viewed the night as just another race, but was happy with the performance.

“It was a lot of fun,” Moffitt said. “I got a lot of experience racing with the cars. These things racing around other cars, they’re really aero dependent, so it’s a lot harder racing around other cars. I learned a lot, so that was good.”

Brad Sweet was the highest finishing rookie, placing 12th.

Elliott Sadler overcame sickness to win the STP 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Chicagoland Speedway.

Elliott Sadler went from sick to stupendous, rallying late to capture Sunday’s STP 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Chicagoland Speedway.

Sadler, who also won the $100,000 Nationwide Dash 4 Cash bonus for the victory, had battled a flu bug for the previous three days, at one point spending 36 hours in bed. But when he arrived at the track Saturday, he felt the worst was behind him and was ready to practice and then race on Sunday.

“I’m still not 100 percent, but it feels good to win here in Chicago,” Sadler said. “My wife and I came here with another couple, which also happens to be my doctor, and we had to put him to work.

“We drank a lot of fluids and I had to have a few IVs just to stay hydrated.”

Give third-place finisher Justin Allgaier a big assist to Sadler’s win, as he blocked runner-up Ricky Stenhouse Jr. several times in the green-white-checkered finish that turned the scheduled 200-lap event into a 201-lap finish.

“We were trying to get to Elliott and working both the high and low line,” said Allgaier, who won this race last season. “At the end, we just couldn’t hold off Ricky, but I’m very proud of this Brandt Chevy team and what we were able to do today.”

Stenhouse eventually got past coming out of Turn 2 in the final lap, but didn’t have enough in his car to pass Sadler. Stenhouse had dominated much of the race, including winning the pole earlier Sunday.

The final battle to the finish line was set up when, with seven laps remaining, Sam Hornish Jr. tapped the rear of Kyle Busch’s car, sending it careening into Brendan Gaughan and putting both vehicles into the wall, bringing out the caution. While it was a tough break for both Gaughan and Busch, the incident was the best thing to happen for Stenhouse, as it set up a two-lap drag race to the checkered flag.

“I feel real bad about it,” Hornish said. “I looked down because it looked like one of our hood pins was coming loose, then I looked up and got right into the back of Kyle’s car. I get along real well with Kyle and, while he had already gotten on his plane and flown out, I apologized to (team manager) Rick Ren and also apologized to Brendan.”

Busch finished 27th while Gaughan wound up right behind in 28th.

Stenhouse’s bid for the victory was hurt when Brad Sweet spun for the second time in the race with 33 laps remaining, Stenhouse was caught on pit lane as the caution flag fell, dropping him from first to 10th when the race returned to green flag conditions.

Sadler assumed the lead at that point and never yielded in the remainder of the event.

“We were in the right place at the right time,” Sadler said. “Ricky had the strongest car all day, but we kept working at it and eventually got into the right position.

“It was a big win, we won the Dash 4 Cash ($100,000 bonus), we kept our lead in the points and we go now to Indianapolis next week for the first-ever Nationwide Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.”

Still, Stenhouse got a great jump on the restart, rode around the track on the high line and began his quest to regain the lead, passing six cars and gaining three spots in the following two laps. He halved Sadler’s two-second lead to just one in seven laps and the pole-sitter appeared as if he would finish off what he started, but it was not to be.

Allgaier made a bid on the second-to-last lap to overtake Sadler, but didn’t have a strong enough car. While he held off Stenhouse as long as he could, Allgaier eventually yielded to the pole-sitter.

Stenhouse wound up leading 135 of the 201 laps, while Sadler led 35.

Allgaier finished third, followed by an outstanding run by series veteran Kenny Wallace and Michael Annett.

Rounding out the top 10 were Austin Dillon, Parker Kligerman, Hornish, Cole Whitt and Ryan Truex.

Danica Patrick finished 14th, the last car on the lead lap.

The points standings stayed the same, with Sadler remaining atop the Nationwide hill. He leads Austin Dillon by 11 points, followed by Stenhouse (19 points back), Hornish (minus-42) and Allgaier (minus-78).

Kurt Busch won a wild Subway Jalapeno 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Daytona in which saw a multi-car wreck on the final lap.

The Great Pumpkin arrived early, and Kurt Busch left Daytona International Speedway with something more than peanuts after winning Friday night’s Subway Jalapeno 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race in a battered No. 1 Chevrolet that looked like a refuge from Halloween.

With a strong push from defending series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Busch took the checkered flag in a wild race that ended with Austin Dillon wrecking in the tri-oval as Busch crossed the finish line.

Stenhouse came home second, followed by Michael Annett, who was pushing Dillon during a green-white-checkered-flag finish that took the race one lap beyond its scheduled distance of 100 laps.

As the action intensified over the final quarter-mile, Dillon slid sideways across the stripe in fourth place, with Joey Logano and series leader Elliott Sadler taking fifth and sixth, respectively. The top-five for Logano, the series’ top winner with five victories this season, took a sour turn in post-race inspection when his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota was ruled too low in front. Penalties for the No. 18 team are possible early next week.

Busch picked up his second win of the season and his fifth in 23 Nationwide starts, in a day-glow orange car that differed from the usual bright red he drives for owner James Finch.

“I showed up at the shop on Tuesday, and we talked about how our Kentucky week went, what we could have done better,” Busch said. “I went out back in the fab (fabrication) shop, and they were wrapping on both of our cars, this fluorescent orange color. And I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’

“It’s just the energy James Finch has for Daytona. He wanted his cars orange, so they could be seen up front, so that car could be recognized without a sponsor on it. And we drove an unsponsored car into Victory Lane tonight. I was just being my normal sarcastic self on the radio, and I said, ‘The Great Pumpkin is here, and the Great Pumpkin isn’t going to lift coming to the checkered flag.’ ”

Stenhouse saw an opportunity on the restart with two laps left and planted the nose of his car on Busch’s rear bumper.

“That last restart, we didn’t have many people to work with, and I saw him (Busch) hung out there in the center, and I got a good restart and jumped to the middle and caught up with the 1,” Stenhouse said. “He was fast all night, and I just pushed him to the win.

“I was hoping I could make a move there (coming to the finish), but I saw the 3 (Dillon) and everybody coming, so I kind of tried to duck out and block them, and we ended up second. It was exciting, and I hope the fans enjoyed it. I had a lot of fun.”

Danica Patrick led 14 laps and escaped one major wreck before being collected late in the race.

As Kevin Harvick and Mike Wallace tried to swap positions at the front of the field on Lap 66, Patrick pushed Justin Allgaier to the front as a 15-car wreck erupted behind her. Wallace moved down the track into the Chevrolet of James Buescher, then bounced up into Brad Keselowski’s Dodge in the outside lane.

The chain-reaction wreck also collected Harvick, series leader Sadler, Kurt and Kyle Busch, Cole Whitt (Patrick’s JR Motorsports teammate), Clint Bowyer and Annett, among others. Sadler’s damage was minimal, and he soon regained the lead. Annett’s crew repaired cosmetic damage on his car as well.

In fact, Sadler held the point on Lap 83, when an off-center push from Ricky Stenhouse Jr. turned Jeffrey Earnhardt sideways in front of the main pack of cars. As drivers checked up in reaction to the wreck, Patrick was launched toward the inside SAFER barrier and took a vicious hit when her No. 7 Chevrolet slammed into the wall.

Busch made six pit stops under caution as his crew repaired the damage to his car — enough to get it to Victory Lane.

Notes: One week after he claimed his first top-five finish in 120 Nationwide starts, Annett picked up his second one . . . Stenhouse, Annett, Dillon and Sadler qualified for the first leg of Nationwide’s Dash 4 Cash next Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The top finisher among those four drivers wins $100,000 . . . Dillon started 42nd after his pole-winning qualifying time was disallowed because a cooling tube in the No. 3 Chevrolet was left open into the cockpit, contrary to a technical bulletin NASCAR issued earlier in the week . . . The race set a Nationwide Series track record for lead changes (42 between 16 drivers).

Austin Dillon administered an emphatic, definitive, no-doubt-about-it beating to 42 also-rans in the Feed the Children 300 at Kentucky Speedway.

In his 26th NASCAR Nationwide Series start — in his first full season in the series — pole-sitter Austin Dillon administered an emphatic, definitive, no-doubt-about-it beating to 42 also-rans in Friday night’s Feed the Children 300 at Kentucky Speedway.

How decisive was Dillon’s first Nationwide victory? Consider this:

Dillon led 192 of 200 laps, most ever by a Nationwide race winner at the 1.5-mile track.

He beat runner-up Kurt Busch to the finish line by 9.828 seconds.

Dillon and seven other drivers finished on the lead lap, despite a mass wave-around for a restart on Lap 150 after the second caution of the race.

When that caution interrupted a series of green-flag pit stops, after Dillon had built a lead of more than seven seconds, he simply ran away from the field after the restart.

Just after the halfway point, on Lap 106, Dillon put Elliott Sadler, the series leader entering the race, a lap down. With his dominating win, Dillon wrested the points lead from Sadler and carries a two-point cushion to Daytona, site of a July 6 Nationwide race.

Dillon’s first taste of the Nationwide points lead may not last for long. His car failed post-race inspection after being ruled too low in the rear. Potential penalties — which could include a deduction of points — are expected to be announced early next week.

Kevin Harvick, Michael Annett and Justin Allgaier completed the top five. For Annett, it was his first top-five finish in 120 Nationwide starts.

“I was loose the whole race,” said Dillon, grandson of team owner Richard Childress. “I’d just get looser and looser, and I was really driving as straight as I could not to slip the tires. I just kind of back-steered the whole race.

“That last adjustment, he (crew chief Danny Stockman) got me tight enough to fire off (the corners) really good. We knew Kurt was good, but our car was just stronger.”

The car Dillon drove was a black No. 3 Chevrolet, reminiscent of the car Dale Earnhardt Sr. drove for Childress until his death in the 2001 Daytona 500.

“Dale would have been proud,” an emotional Childress said after the race.

Busch thought he would be able to gain ground on Dillon during the final green-flag run, but it didn’t work out that way.

“Austin Dillon, he was in his own zip code,” Busch said. “So congratulations to him, Richard Childress, those guys. It’s neat to see that kid develop. I thought we could battle with him. I expected to lose some ground to him early in the run. I expected he would be quicker than us for 20 laps.

“I thought that we would level out after 10 more, and I thought we could reel him in with 20 to go and put on a show for the fans here in Kentucky — and he was just too strong tonight. . . . He just had that car dialed in. There was nothing that we could do.”

In fact, Busch got as close as 4.1 seconds behind during the final 51-lap run, but he dropped a cylinder in the closing laps and fell back but held second place.

Richard Petty Motorsports announced that it will field a Nationwide Series entry in 2012.

Richard Petty Motorsports announced that it will field a Nationwide Series entry in 2012. Michael Annett will drive the team’s No. 43 Pilot Flying J Ford Mustang full time in 2012. The team will run out of RPM’s shop in Concord, NC and will vie for the Nationwide Series championship.

Annett joins RPM from Rusty Wallace Inc, which suspended operations in the off-season. Annett posted 13 top-10 finishes in 105 Nationwide Series starts and drove to a ninth-place finish in the championship points standings last season.

He said:

They say that when one door closes, another door opens, and that is most definitely true. We were left scrambling a bit because of the situation with RWI and were unsure what the future held, but I couldn’t be happier with the way things have turned out. To have the chance to race for Richard Petty and to be under the RPM umbrella is amazing. It has all come together really quickly, but together with Pilot Flying J and Ford, this is the best opportunity I have ever had to race a Nationwide Series car. There’s a lot to be done before we get to Daytona in a few weeks and I can’t wait to dive in and get started.

Team owner Richard Petty said:

We are looking forward to getting back into the Nationwide Series full time and seeing what Michael Annett can do in an RPM Ford Mustang. Michael has improved every season he has raced in the Nationwide Series and has the dedication and drive to be a success.
