Jeremy Mayfield will return to Sprint Cup competition full time in 2009, driving the No. 41 Toyota for his own team, Mayfield Motorsports.

MM is a joint venture between Mayfield and Gary Smith, Chairman and CEO of All Sport Inc., which will sponsor Mayfield’s entry. All Sport body quencher is a sports drink.

Mayfield attributed his venture into ownership to a key change NASCAR made in the off season:

I have to give NASCAR a lot of credit for the things they’ve done in the sport over the last two years to make it possible for people like me to get involved as a team owner. The new COT car and even more importantly the testing ban have made it a reality for me to come in and compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Triad Racing Technologies will provide engines and chassis for MM, while Tony Furr will serve as crew cheif. Furr served as crew cheif for Cale Yarborough’s No. 98 team and driver John Andretti, where he led Andretti to victory in the Pepsi 400 from Daytona International Raceway. He also led Jerry Nadeau to his first and only victory, in the Napa 500 from Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hendrick Motorsports’ No. 25.

Mayfield acquired the number from Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, but the points from the 41 did not move to Mayfield’s team.

See images of the car on Jayski’s page.

The U.S. Air Force announced that will leave Wood Brothers Racing to sponsor Gillett Evernham Motorsports’ No. 10 Dodge, driven by Reed Sorenson, for four races next season.

The Air Force is changing its marketing strategy to rebalance its sponsorship and activation programs to increase public awareness of the Air Force and to attract more recruits.

Col. Timothy Hanson, Air Force Recruiting Service director of Strategic Communications, said:

Advertising and marketing that goes beyond the race track will help us connect with fans and emphasize the speed, power, precision, and team work that is common to both NASCAR and the Air Force.

Rumor has it that Dale Earnhardt Inc. and Petty Enterprises are in talks to merge, but how a DEI-Petty deal would work remains unclear.

Earlier this year, Boston Ventures purchased a significant stake in Petty Enterprises. The team is seeking a sponsor for Bobby Labonte and its No. 43 Dodge, which lost General Mills to Richard Childress Racing’s No. 33 team and driver Clint Bowyer.

The team is also said to be at odds with Kyle Petty, who could leave and take the team’s only major sponsor, Wells Fargo, with him.

DEI is also searching for sponsorship, after US Army bolted for Stewart Haas Racing’s No. 39 and driver Ryan Newman. Paul Menard is leaving at the end of the season to go to Yates Racing, and he is taking his Menards sponsorship with him, leaving DEI with Bass Pro Shops as its only sponsor, on Martin Truex Jr.’s No 1 Chevy. DEI currently has Regan Smith and Aric Almirola on its roster, but sponsors for neither team.

Bloomberg News is reporting that due to the state of the economy, NASCAR sponsorships are on the decline. “General Motors Corp., Chrysler Corp., Sears Holdings Corp. and Chevron Corp. will cut or drop sponsorships next season.”

Some teams the sport that biggest names, Petty, Earnhardt, and Waltrip could enter the 2009 season with unsponsored cars. Chip Ganassi racing’s No. 40 team lost its Coors sponsorship last season, and managed to stay afloat using a patchwork of one-race deals. The team was shut down earlier this season. Chevron is pulling its Texaco sponsorship of Ganassi’s other team, the No 42 next season.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s Nationwide team, JR Motorsports lost its primary sponsor when the U.S. Navy announced it would not return to the No. 88. The team has won two races this season, and sits third in points, and it lost its primary sponsor. That’s an indication of how bad things are.

Earnhardt Jr. said:

The economy is the way it is, there isn’t much you can do about it. A lot of these guys are going to walk around empty-handed next year. … We’ll race the races we can afford to race. A lot of the people that work there are family and so that place has to be open.
